10 questions with Todd Bermont by Larry W. Robinson:
Challenging times demand an innovative approach to your job search. In school, rarely do they ever teach you how to find a job, write a winning resume and cover letter or how to ace a job interview. Now, Todd Bermont, an expert in applying fundamental selling techniques to job hunting, is here to help you level the playing field in your job search! Learn the insider secrets with Todd Bermont below:
Q. You have authored numerous books. One of
your most popular books is
"10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search?” Why
do so many people consider
you an expert and authority when it comes to
successfully assisting others
in finding the jobs they want?
A. The secrets I share with people have been learned
by my real-life experience
from both sides of the interviewing desk. In
college, I graduated with six
job offers. During the recession of the early
'90's, when I decided to leave
IBM, I received 3 job offers in the first two
weeks of looking. Then, in my
management roles at APC, I hired scores of
employees, so I have had
real-life experience of what I looked for as a
hiring manager as well. It is
this real-life experience, from both sides of the
interviewing desk, that
differentiates me from other experts in the
field.
Q. When looking for a job what is the first and
most important step a
person should take?
A. To decide what you REALLY want to do for a
living. Until you can determine
what job you can be really passionate about, no
matter how good your
experience and resume is, you will have a tough
time in today's job market.
You have to know what you want and have passion
about it.
Q. Why is that so important?
A. In today's job market we are competing against
not only thousands of
qualified candidates domestically, but
internationally as well. Years ago,
outsourcing was not an issue. Today, and for the
forseeable future it is. As
a result, we have to be crystal clear about what
we want because we will be
competing against many others who will know what
they want and have the
passion to get it. Without full passion,
employers will not want to hire
you. They will select from the thousands of
others who do have full passion
for a given position.
Q. What are the major mistakes many people make
when searching for a job
and how can people avoid those mistakes?
A. 1. Not being able to quantify the value you can
bring to a job. Companies
want people who will contribute to the
bottom-line and many people have
failed to articulate the tangible benefits they
can provide.
2. Lack of preparation for interviews. A football
team will practice an
entire week for one three-hour game. Many people
fail to put that kind of
practice and preparation into their job search
and job interviews.
3. Lack of confidence. If you don't believe in
yourself, no one will.
Q. Where should people go first when looking for
a job?
A. Family, friends, previous co-workers, previous
customers as well as people
you continue to help such as your doctors,
dentists, lawyers, accountants,
hair stylists, insurance agents, etc. I have
found the Internet to basically
be useless when it comes to getting interviews.
Q. When you do not have a paying job, what
should be your most important
job?
A. Your most important job is to find a job. This is
something I forgot to
mention in the mistakes question, however, one of
the other biggest mistakes
people make is not treating the job search like a
job. Believe me it is!
Q. How important is networking in a person’s
quest to finding employment?
A. Extremely important. Over 80% of all jobs are
still found through
networking.
Q. How do you yourself use the advice you talk
about in your book on a
continuous basis?
A. I sell sales training for a living. Just like in
job hunting, I am both the
product and the salesperson as it is my own
business and I am the one that
delivers the customized sales training for
companies. Every day, I have to
sell myself to get hired to do a one-hour to
one-day sales training
engagement or a keynote speech. I have to show
how previous clients have
gotten a tremendous return on their investment
and how my future prospects
(companies that can hire me) can expect to have a
huge return on their
investment as well. My best tool for that is
testimonial letters from
previous clients. Testimonial letters and awards
from your previous jobs is
one of the best ways you can sell yourself in the
job search.
Q. So when you are not writing and speaking what
do you do for creative
fun?
A. I love sports, travelling, cooking and spending
quality time with family and
friends.
Q. What final thoughts and comments would you
like to leave with our
listening audience?
A. Everything happens for a reason. Don't ever doubt
yourself or your ability
to succeed. Eventually you will find the job you
are destined for that will
bring you great joy and prosperity. Each step you
take gets you closer to
that reality. Keep the faith. Everyone comes into
this world and leaves it
the same way. You don't have to put anybody on a
pedistal above you. You are
a great person and deserve great things to happen
in your life. Don't get
down. View this as an opportunity. Best wishes
for a happy, healthy and
prosperous life.
